Jeanne van Heeswijk is a internationally acclaimed artist working in the social and cultural sphere. For this project, Jeanne and her team, Dennis Kaspori amongst others, was asked to develop an application designed to stimulate interest in a elderly institution in the South of The Netherlands. The application is a sort of virtual hostess, Ariadne, which interacts and mediates between the users and the functionalities of the site. Due to the very specific audience several tests were carried out in situ to establish the level of internet knowledge of the inhabitants and what are the functions that may be of interest to them. My role was to design and animate a character based on a real person, Eva van Welzenis, that visits monthly the elderly and introduce them to the site and its functions. People can upload text and pictures, can have a discussion with other inhabitants of the institution that may not be known to them, or get to know new people. Ariadne, the online presence, is very simply animated to convey empathy with the functions and to invite people to participate.
